Sandown Racecourse History
In the 19th century racing was staged at Hampton in the Sunbury-on-Thames area of London, although the course was not enclosed which made it difficult to control and even more difficult to make it pay. The Jockey Club were reluctant to allow the course to continue once safety became an issue, opening up the chance for other courses in the area to develop. Two such courses were Hurst Park and Kempton Park, but arguably the most successful of them all was Sandown Park. The first meeting to take place on this closed park course, where an admission charge of half a crown was made, was on Thursday 22nd April 1875. The opening race, the Trial Stakes, was won by Mr T Smith’s Sivori, with the full result shown below. Although the crowd was lower than had been anticipated because of inclement weather, this did not deter Hwfa Williams, Sir Wilfred Brett and General Owen Williams from celebrating the realisation of their dream to create a magnificent, enclosed course on the outskirts of London. They even constructed a Royal Box for the use of the Prince of Wales. The ever ambitious Hwfa Williams sought to expand interest in Sandown when he invited the Household Brigade to host a meeting in 1876. The first Eclipse Stakes, a £10,000 race supported by Leopold de Rothschild, was run in 1886 when won by Bendigo, beating the Derby winner St Gatien (see racecard below). At this time the Derby was only worth £4,600, which indicates the importance of the Eclipse Stakes. In 1887 the Prince of Wales won the Grand Military Gold Cup with Hohenlinden, while in 1900 Diamond Jubilee provided the Prince of Wales with another Eclipse success. Racing ceased between 1914 and 1918 during the First World War when the ground was used for agricultural purposes, and closed again between 1939 and 1945 when used as a training ground for the Welsh Guards. Sandown became famous in 1947 as the first racecourse to have a race shown live on television. The course closed in 1972 for refurbishment and rebuilding work immediately after Brigadier Gerard triumphed in the Eclipse Stakes, but reopened in 1973. The course launched the Whitbread Gold Cup in 1957 and the Tingle Creek Chase, named after the speedy chaser who won at Sandown many times in the 1970s. The Queen Mother and Lord Oaksey made frequent visits to the course and hinted that this was their favourite course. In the same way that many Aintree fences are known the world over, so the group of railway fences and the Pond fence have built up a similar reputation. Currently the course hosts 26 fixtures annually. |

Sandown Park continues to thrive today, whereas nearby Croydon closed its gates for the final time in 1890.
Racing first took place in the Surrey town of Croydon on Croydon Common in 1841, although there was then a lapse before a more formal period of racing began in 1860. The first 2 day meeting was staged on Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th December 1860 when the Railway Stakes saw Harlequin beat Surprise, the Croydon Stand Plate went to Red Rover, and the Metropolitan to Johnny. The oval course was a mile and three furlongs in circumference, slightly downhill from the mile to 6 furlong marker, but then with an incline leading up to the winning post. Steeplechase and Flat meetings took place for the next 30 years, although they were often blighted by the weather. In 1867, and again in 1869, meetings had to be constantly postponed due to snow and frost. The final 2 day meeting was held on Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th October 1890. Wednesday 15th October 1890 |

The famous inaugural running of the Eclipse Stakes over 1 ¼ miles on Friday 23rd July 1886 was worth 10,000 sovereigns to the winner. The favourite was Bendigo, bred in Ireland in 1880 by Mr M Taylor, and later sold at The Curragh in 1882 for 70 guineas to Mt T Connolly. He did not run as a 2 year old, and changed hands in 1883 for 850 guineas to Mr Hedworth T Barclay. He ran unplaced in the Cesarewiitch, but won the Cambridgeshire at 50/1. The next year he was defeated in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood as well as the Cambridgeshire, but as a 6 year old he won the Lincoln and the Hardwicke Stakes at Ascot. |

Starting in 1875, J.R.GAUNT & SON LTD in Montreal, Canada and London, Great Britain produced metalwork. (Tokens, badges, buttons) for police, railroad, military and other Governmental and private agencies on custom die stamps. After the initial production run the die was placed in the factory inventory, most of the older ones are over 100 years old. A few years ago these rusted dies were sold as scrap metal; some were salvaged displaying a number of different designs, the one show above being one of them. Made of solid steel with a raised relief, this die stamp is pictured beside a penny for size comparison; the penny is about 18mm across. The die stamp shown above reads ‘Sandown Park Season Pass Badge 1905’, this is the first production die in a series of two for that year, the image of the horse having not been applied or embossed yet. This is known as a hub die, a positive die or right reading die, used for the making of the working press dies. In brief: A design is engraved into this solid steel plate or round and then hardened by heat treatment. This hub die (the positive) is then pressed into the end of specially prepared steel cylinders to form a (negative) impression. That steel cylinder then becomes the stamping die which presses out the insignia. The hub die is actually a master die from which numerous stamping dies can be made. The hub dies were maintained in inventory when the production run was completed as they could always be used to manufacture more working press dies. As such, these are probably the only remnants from the original insignia / button production run. |

In addition to the Eclipse Stakes, which is covered in detail below, Sandown Park plays host to 5 other Grade 1 races throughout the season. The Tolworth Hurdle over 2 miles was first run in 1976 when won by Grand Canyon, ridden by Peter Haynes. The Scilly Isles Novices Chase, over 2 miles 4 furlongs and 110 yards, is named after an area near Sandown Park called Scilly Isles, and was first run in 1964 when won by Buona Notte ridden by Johnny Haine. The Celebration Chase over 2 miles was first contested in 2001 when won by Edredon Bleu, ridden by Tony McCoy. The Henry VIII Novices Chase over 2 miles reminds todays racegoers that Henry VIII commandeered Esher as a royal hunting ground. The race was first contested in 1987 when won by Ballyhane, ridden by Richard Rowe. The final Grade 1 race, and probably the most famous apart from the Eclipse Stakes, is the Tingle Creek Chase over 2 miles. It commemorates the popular, exciting chaser Tingle Creek, who was spectacular on his many visits to Sandown Park, and was first staged in 1979 when won by Artifice ridden by Richard Hoare.

In 1920 the 3-day April meeting, from Thursday 22nd to Saturday 24th April, featured the Esher Cup (1050 sovereigns) over 1 mile and 60 yards on the first day. The race was won by Roman Bachelor (2/1 fav) owned by Mr N Baring, trained by Peter Gilpin and ridden by A.Smith. On day 2 the feature race was the Twenty-Third renewal of the Tudor Plate for 3 year olds over 1 mile and 60 yards, which was won by the Duke of Portland’s Valkyrian (10/1) trained by W Waugh and ridden by Frank Bullock. However, the card on the third and final day was run under National Hunt rules and featured the Grand International Handicap Chase of 500 sovereigns over 3 ½ miles. A field of 18 faced the starter, the race being won by Baron de Tuyll’s Daydawn (7/1) ridden by T Hulme and trained by F Hartigan. Daydawn won by 1 ½ lengths from Wavebeam (20/1) with 4 lengths back to Cargo (5/2 fav). That same year the Grand National, run at Aintree on Friday 26th March, was valued at 5000 sovereigns, which included a trophy to the value of 150 sovereigns. In 1921 the Grand International was abandoned due to the coal strike, but by 1922 Daydawn retained his crown when ridden by Hogan jnr.The race was viewed as a forerunner to the Whitbread Gold Cup, a handicap over 3 miles 5 furlongs, which had its inaugural running in 1957. |
